  • PC Slave Recommendations for VEPro

    Hi there,

My old Mac which I use solely as a slave for VEPro is about to go 'bang', so I'm looking for a new gigabit ethernet slave with about 64GB RAM and 2GB of internal memory.

Lots of people have suggested buying a PC (to save unnecessary expenditure) and although the set-up time (downloading all the PC versions of my Kontakt virtual instruments) may be worth considering, so is the relative price!

So with price in mind, do you have any tried and tested recommendations? I'm happy to buy second hand - but never having used a PC before ...

  • I am pondering the same question. I have looked at HP ProDesk 600 G2 and Dell  Dell XPS 8910. They both have 4 DIMM slots, and can be configured with up 64 gig of memory.

From the Dell website:Dell XPS 8910 with Intel i7 chips, 8gig mem +, 1Terabyte  7200 drive is about $750 direct with 10% coupon.  Extra ram is 149for 16g = $300 for 32 gigs (i think we can add that to the 8 gig in there for 40gig total.)  I won't need anything special for any other use- it will just be a slave for my main Mac based . total $1050.

The HP is a little more expensive at $850, but they have an option to get 1 16 gig chip for an extra $100, for a total of $950, and then adding one more chip would make the same price- about $1050. HP has some other options, including addint a solid state drive- but this comes with improved graphics- which I dont need.

  • Looking at the mac mini, at $1000 for the premium version, adding $200 to make it Intel i7 instead of i5, and $200 to make it 16 gig internal memory makes it $1400, and it is still not as robust as the PCs- but I do love my Macs!

  • Sweetwater.com configures music based rackmountable systems. They have a $1400 system that comes with 8gigs ram, a 240 gig solid state drive and a 1 terabyte hard drive . with an i5 processor- which means that there are 4 cores with 4 threads per core, as opposed to the i7 which has 4 cores and 8 threads per core. I imagine that adding ram is $149 per 16 gigs.
