  • Instruments

    Taikos are traditional Japanese keg-shaped drums with horse or cowhide nailed to their frames, ranging from very small to gigantic. They were played with cudgels, gong mallets, brushes, and super ball. Roto toms consist of skins stretched over a metal frame without a body or shell. Turning the frame changes the skins’ tension and thus the pitch of the drums. Synchron Percussion’s second bass drum is a Lefima 28, a traditional large bass drum with a crisp sound. It was recorded with up to 16 dynamic levels and 8 round robins for single strokes.

    • Brushes: single strokes normal and muted; swishes 0.5/1//2/8 sec., and tremolo; hard brushes: rim and hardware strokes

    • Effects: sizzles normal and rolls, sticks on shell and hardware; rim strokes normal and 1–4 upbeats; superball, var. 1–4
