Welcome to the Vienna Symphonic Library’s series of Synchron Instruments! The instruments were recorded at Stage A, the main hall of Vienna’s revitalized Vienna Synchron Stage. The recordings were executed using an expansive, phase-controlled multi-microphone set-up, capturing string effects played in a scoring stage with exceptional acoustics, now ready to be used in your studio. This document will provide you with the information you need to use the Library with our Vienna Synchron Player.
All the instruments were recorded using 13 microphones, subdivided into 8 sections. The Standard Library includes 4 of these sections (as well as a RAM-friendly Room Mix section composed of merged samples from the individual positions), allowing you to integrate instruments recorded with a stereo Decca tree into your projects using the Vienna Instruments and Vienna Instruments Pro players or our mixing hosts Vienna Ensemble and Vienna Ensemble Pro. Adding the Extended Library and thus getting the Full Library expands your possibilities to 5.1 surround and Auro 3D 9.1, with the additional option of a microphone in the rear of the hall to expand your sound possibilities.
Standard Library
- Close Mic – Mono
- Mid Layer Mic – Stereo (L/R)
- Main/Room Mic – Decca Tree Stereo (L/R)
- Main/Room Mic – Decca Tree Mono (Center)
Extended Library
- Back/Room Mic – Stereo (L/R)
- Main Surround – Stereo (L/R)
- High Stereo (3D) – Stereo (L/R)
- High Surround (3D) – Stereo (L/R)
The instrument Presets also include different mixer presets. By default the classic room mixes are loaded which include the Standard Library microphone positions "Room-Mix", "Close" and "Mid". These are balanced in the stereo field to represent the respective instrument’s position in the Synchron Stage set-up.
Auro 3D is an immersive audio technology that allows for three-dimensional sound perception. The Belgian company Auro Technologies developed this technology based on a special speaker configuration, adding four additional speakers to a 5.1 surround configuration. These speakers (so-called "Heights") are situated above the front and surround speakers and generate acoustic reflections that are perceived naturally due to the fact that sounds originate from around as well as from above the listener. Thanks to the comprehensive selection of discrete audio channels with the Full Library of Synchron Strings I you may mix your instruments in Auro 3D as well as in Dolby Atmos.
The Presets of each instrument group are subdivided into 8 different Articulation categories (plus a ninth named "Custom", ready for your own creations):
- Short Notes
- Long Notes
- Legato
- Dynamics
- Tremolo
- Half tone trill
- Whole tone trill
- Pizzicato
Within these Articulation categories, you can select a Type (if applicable), e.g., soft or normal legato, and for some of the types there are additional options available, such as Attack or Tremolo Control.
Apart from the regular Presets, you will also find dedicated Velocity Crossfade Presets in your player’s browser window. These contain the same Articulations; however, with the difference that Velocity XF is activated. Moreover, Dim-Ctrl/A (attack) is set to velocity control from 0 to 75 (MIDI values 0–95) with a flat curve as shown in the Control Tab.
The Velocity XF Presets allow you to crossfade between velocities with MIDI CC2, while keystroke velocity affects the amount of marcato (where applicable).
The Patch information in this document includes articulation types, playing range, the number of velocity layers and alternations, etc., as well as Patch specific information if necessary.
- Full naturally gives you all velocities and full control, at the price of higher RAM usage.
- Soft contains the lower velocities, roughly from ppp to mp.
- Med contains velocities between p and f.
- Loud of course includes high velocities from mf to ff. Soft and Loud are complementary, so that together they would make Full.
The ranges can be activated by keyswitches C2–D#2 on high instruments, C6–D#6 on low instruments.
For these recordings, we implemented a new method of organizing repetitions, making Patches even more versatile than they were up to now. As a rule, Patches now contain 4 different starting notes which will be played alternately at lower speeds (to be exact, if the break between two notes is longer than 200 ms), and 6 "connected" repetitions for higher tempos. This means that you will not have to take care of switching to dedicated Performance or Fixed Repetition Patches to achieve the desired result since you have several means of expression comprised in a single Patch.
The additional "XFade Resource" folders contain Patches designed specially to create marcato layers for long notes as well as crossfade options between lyric and no vibrato. You can use these for your custom Articulations/Types in the same way they are implemented in the instruments’ default Preset.
For designating pitch, the Vienna Symphonic Library uses International Pitch Notation (IPN), which was agreed upon internationally under the auspices of the Acoustical Society of America. In this system the international standard of A=440 Hz is called A4 and middle C is C4. All pitches are written as capital letters, their respective octave being indicated by a number next to it. The lowest C on the piano is C1 (the A below that is A0), etc.
The Synchron Player software allows you to set middle C to C3, C4, or C5 according to your preference. Selecting another setting than C4 will of course also change the play ranges and keyswitches accordingly.
The Preset for Synchron Strings I comprises all recorded Patches in Articulation groups, which again contain Types of the respective Articulation, with further options if available. Articulations are disabled by default. Enabling an Articulation means that all the Types contained will be activated, too, so if you happen to be short of RAM it is advisable only to activate what you really need (you can always add more Types later).
By default the keyswitches for Articulations are mapped from C1 to G#1 (for Middle C = C4) for violins, violas, and cellos, and C5 to G#5 for the double basses. If there are Types available, the keyswitches start from F2 for violins and violas, and from F6 for cellos and basses.
Important
An update adds cantabile long notes and legatos. In order to keep keyswitching consistent across ensembles, Type keyswitches for these articulations start at E2, with cantabile as the first option.
Additional options within Articulations or Types are offered by the Dimension Controllers. The controller function is indicated by the respective caption, as of course it may take on different tasks as needed.
The double basses do not feature lyrical vibrato variations.
You can find more information about individual articulations in the "Patches" section starting on page 16.
Apart from the individual string ensembles, there is also a Preset featuring Patches containing all ensembles. The combined strings are only available with full velocity range and do not have any legato Patches, so the Legato Articulation slot remains empty. They are especially useful for quick layouts and for playing an entire string orchestra live!
